The Netherlands vetoes the start of Negotiations with Albania

Dear ladies and gentleman, We would like to thank you for your support in this initiative and for trusting us with your signatures. We are grateful! With this message we would like to share with you two updates, and as usual in these cases we have a negative and a positive one. As many of you might be aware, yesterday the Netherlands voted against the start of accession talks with Albania. VVD, CDA, CU, PVV, SP and 50Plus parliamentary groups held a negative stand while D66 and GroenLinks were positive on opening negotiations. For more information you can read this article (dutch only): https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/2201098/nederland-blokkeert-toetreding-albanie-tot-eu Although this was expected, we are saddened by the outcome as we truly believe that reform is only possible within the framework of a EU vision. Despite not having been able to change this course of action (such decisions are political and driven by diverse interest groups), we are very happy with our achievements. With almost 1000 signatures in 48 hours we sent a strong message to the Dutch parliament, showing that we are able to unite and provide a civil society perspective on the issue. This petition is one of the first actions we are taking on behalf of the Albanian diaspora in the Netherlands. As a group of young Albanians that have made the Netherlands their second home we are in the process of launching a foundation whose aim is to organise cultural, research and business related activities as well as to strengthen the interaction between Dutch and Albanian communities.
