Wednesday 5 July marks 10 months to go before my 77 year old Dad (Grandpa) Kamal will have served his full 7 year sentence for alleged "espionage". Will Iran free him early? Will Dad ever return to London to be with us his family? Or will he die a lonely old man in Evin prison? The UK general election has passed and the 2017 intake of MPs is now in parliament. For those of you in the UK, if you haven't contacted your new/re-elected MP yet, Amnesty has developed a useful webpage where you can enter your postcode and generate a message: www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/help-get-nazanin-and-kamal-home The election also led to a change in the Foreign Office Minister responsible for the Middle East. Tobias Ellwood has moved to the Ministry of Defence, and his role has been taken by Alistair Burt. We already have a meeting booked to meet Minister Burt on Monday 17 July - let's see if that helps. Last week, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (the global experts) published a ruling about Dad that states his detention is arbitrary. The UN ruling is damning about Iran's legal conduct and demands Dad's immediate release and an investigation by the government into the violation of Dad's human rights. Now it's official. How is Dad? He was taken back to hospital on Wednesday 21 June for more prostate related medical tests, but still no results have been shared with Dad or us. Very worrying, particularly as Dad is two months away from turning 78 years old.
