Votes for 16 and 17 Year Olds

The Issue

This election, 52% of votes cast went to parties who support the lowering of the voting age to allow sixteen and seventeen year olds to vote. This is a clear majority and the next government must recognise this as the democratic will of the people of the United Kingdom, and to ignore this would be blatant disregard for democracy and the general population. Younger people have voted in far greater numbers this election (though the exact statistic is yet to be released), showing that now, more than ever, young people are showing an interest in their future and a desire to be involved with the political process. Sixteen and seventeen year olds deserve a right to decide who represents them, as they show the maturity to decide many other choices - for example, deciding options in their education - and some even pay tax on their earnings.

It is clear that it is the will of the people for the voting age to be lowered to sixteen, and as such I urge the government to put this policy into place.
