It’s been tempting to write this line before, but I think we can now do so with confidence: Theresa May’s Brexit deal is dead.

Yes, it feels like it’s been a long time coming, but we should pause for a minute and consider the enormity of what’s happening. Nearly three years since the referendum, and 17 days before the deadline to leave the EU on 29 March, the soap opera of resignations, ridiculous proclamations and political rifts has come to this.

Today, the attorney general Geoffrey Cox confirmed that no solution to the thorny problem of the Northern Irish backstop has been found. (Without wishing to say we told them so, it’s worth noting that the sane elements of the media – The Independent included – saw these difficulties from the start, but let’s not go there.) Tonight Theresa May is broadly expected to suffer a huge defeat as MPs across the house vote down her Brexit deal – for a second time.

So what should happen next? Do you want to leave this to the politicians to solve in the next fortnight, so that your future doesn’t go over the Brexit cliff-edge? No, me neither.

Well, here’s some good news: there is something you can do. Join us on 23 March and march through London to show the Prime Minister, the political establishment and the country that the people deserve the Final Say on this subject.

Since the petition (it’s still live, and people are still signing it) and the last March (when around 700,000 people joined us), the option of a referendum has rapidly become an increasingly likely option. You don’t need me spell out why it is the only good outcome (a glance at the TV to see how parliament is dealing with the situation should do that job), but here goes: we all now know that the promises at the referendum are far from the reality we now face, and people deserve to sign off on the idea of leaving the EU or to say that knowing now what we do, we would rather call the whole thing off.

Act now – there really is no time to waste. Sign up to the march here. Sign up to our regular emails giving you the latest on the campaign here. (If you already have a registered account with The Independent, sign in first and choose to receive the email under the ‘Account details’ tab.) And come and grill our resident experts in person at our Brexit debate on 29 March here (there’s a date you may not forget!).

Excuse the phrase, but let’s take back control!
