Tomorrow, Labour Party members will consider a motion at their annual conference which would turn the possibility of a Final Say on Brexit into official party policy.
This is a hugely encouraging step, surely reflecting the growing desire among citizens of this country to re-examine the whole Brexit question – in the light both of information which has emerged since the 2016 referendum, and the ever increasing potential for a messy, no-deal withdrawal.
If anything, the events of the last few weeks have shown even more clearly why there is an imperative to let the people decide the future of the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union. The prime minister last week demanded “respect” from EU leaders; yet she has seemingly made little headway in her negotiations – her meeting with EU peers in Salzburg left the two sides further apart than ever.
No wonder that people on both sides of the Brexit debate continue to lose faith in a process they are shut out of, and that appears to be failing.
We are so grateful to everyone who has signed our petition. When we launched it, we knew there were many who shared our view on the need for the British public to be given a Final Say on Brexit. Even so, it has been remarkable to see so many people – now over 820,000 – take the time to express their support for our campaign. We ask you today to continue sharing the petition far and wide so that we can deliver 1 million signatures to Downing Street before the Brexit deadline is upon us.
It is vital that the government knows how people feel about this issue, which is why we hope to see you at the March for the Future, organised by People’s Vote, which the Final Say campaign is backing. You can find out more about the event at peoples-vote.uk/march. And if you can, please also donate to help People’s Vote pay for the costs of the march – such events are neither easy nor free to organise.
To march with the backing of hundreds of thousands of signatures will send out a strong message to Theresa May and her cabinet. We are determined that the call for a Final Say on Brexit cannot be ignored.
With that in mind, please keep spreading the word to your friends, family and social media follows. As the developments at the Labour conference show, the idea of giving the people a Final Say is gaining traction. Let’s together ensure that our voices are heard.
