Just over a week ago, we started our Final Say campaign for the people to get a referendum on the Brexit deal. Already more than 500,000 of you have signed our petition – making it the biggest in the history of The Independent. From politicians to pop stars, actors to activists, scientists to students, your response has been amazing – we clearly feel very passionately about this issue. Now we need to maintain the momentum. Please help us to keep this campaign visible by posting a picture of yourself on social media holding a sign saying “I want a Final Say”, and tell us why in the post, using the hashtag #finalsay. (There’s also a filter on Facebook, if you know how to use those – I’ve stuck with pen and paper myself, as you can see.) I’d love to know how you feel about the campaign. I’ve set out my reasons for supporting it before. 1) We all know so much more now about Brexit than we did in 2016. 2) After two years of party politics, rows and resignations, the public have lost faith in the parliamentary process being capable of delivering a result that people want – so we all need to settle this, not just MPs. 3) The people started this, now it’s only natural and democratic that we check back in at the end and make sure this is what we want.
