Women are being left in the dark! -  Learn about Mammograms and Dense Breasts!

Mammograms are the first step in breast screening.  Mammograms find some cancers - but not all.

Dense breast tissue is not abnormal, so why does it matter on a mammogram?

• Dense breast tissue shows as white/grey on a mammogram but, unfortunately, so do cancerous tumours.
• In the UK, annually, approx 3500 cancers are left undetected in dense breasts. 
• The denser the breast tissue, the harder it is to detect a cancer.  In women with the densest breasts, about 40% of cancers will be “hidden”. 
• These hidden cancers may continue to grow and be found when later stage and not as treatable
• In addition to hiding cancers, breast density is also a well-established risk factor for the development of breast cancer.
• Additional tests after a mammogram increase cancer detection in women with dense breasts.

Currently, following a mammogram, women with dense breasts are not offered additional screening. 

Therefore, it is CRITICAL that women remain: 

• Breast aware 
• Self check their breasts regularly 
• Visit GP or breast centre if anything unusual found 
• Remain vigilant for changes between mammogram examinations 

We respectfully ask the Prime Minister to support  this campaign - a NHS Patient Fact Sheet on dense breasts to educate women about the limitations of mammograms.  Women have the right to this information - it will save lives.
