Today, we have cause to celebrate. Our voices have been heard. Because of your passion and support, a Minister for Suicide Prevention has been appointed. Watch my thank you film here: http://bit.ly/suicideminister This is just the beginning and there is much work still to be done. But today we should reflect on the power of our voices and hope for a future with fewer suicides. Thank you – on behalf of myself, my family, CALM and, of course, my brother Dan. Dan took his own life more than thirteen years ago and, ever since that day, I’ve been pushing for change so that no other family has to go through what we did. When we launched the petition in March this year and saw the outpouring of support from hundreds of thousands of people I was overwhelmed. I knew suicide was a tough issue from my own experience, but I never imagined quite how many people were touched by this and would join me and CALM in calling for change. Nearly 400,000 signatures later and we have a Minister for Suicide Prevention. It’s incredible and I’m excited for what comes next, in terms of improving support up and down the country for people who feel that taking their own life is their only option, and of course for anyone bereaved by suicide. Stay tuned for more updates on the announcement which marks World Mental Health Day. Thank you again for all your support! Matthew and the team at CALM x
