The TGA has released the details on the much anticipated public consultations on alkyl nitrites (poppers) promised after their back-down from an immediate ban in late November. Please see the accompanying link for the event details and registration details.

It is vital that as signatories of the Don't Ban Poppers! petition we make our voices heard - so we encourage all signatories to register their attendance and pre-register important questions you have for the TGA with regards to their proposed rescheduling of poppers. At the meetings we will hear more from the TGA about their justifications for rescheduling and we will learn more about what they believe is the best way to move forward. This will be our opportunity to make our voices heard and voice our expectations to the TGA with regards to our ongoing safe and responsible access and use of poppers by consenting adults.

We must not accept anything less than continued access to poppers and the enshrining of poppers as an important sexual aid for receptive partners.

Some example questions you may like to ask the TGA:

  • 'Does the TGA acknowledge the therapeutic benefits of alkyl nitrites (or what is commonly referred to as 'amyl' or 'poppers') as a sexual aid - particularly for receptive partners?'
  • 'Does the TGA acknowledge the history of safe, responsible use of 'poppers' by consenting adults over five decades as a sexual aid?'
  • 'Does the TGA acknowledge that any restriction on the access and use of 'poppers' will unfairly target and discriminate against the LGBTIQ community in Australia?'
  • 'Will the TGA assist those that wish to safely and responsibly utilise 'poppers' as a sexual aid?'
  • 'Will the TGA hinder access to individuals that wish to safely and responsibly utilise 'poppers' as a sexual aid?'
  • Will the TGA release the full details on how this process of rescheduling first came about?
