On February 9th, we sent a letter to Disney officials stating that Disney’s EIA for their cruise port at Lighthouse Point will be a “litmus test of its new 2030 Sustainability Goals for ‘protecting the planet and delivering a positive environmental legacy for future generations as we operate and grow our business.’”
On February 16th, Dr. Penning sent a reply claiming that the EIA will be available within the next few weeks, the same promise which was made nearly five months ago. Dr. Penning stated that the document is “one of the most comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessments ever for a project in The Bahamas.” However, they still have not publicly released the Oxford Economics Study which purportedly shows that the cruise port is a good deal for The Bahamas, nor have they committed to examining sea level rise and other climate change impacts in the EIA.
We remain concerned that the EIA will be jammed through without proper consideration of the long-term implications for the environment and the people of South Eleuthera. We and a panel of international experts concerned about LHP are prepared to engage in a thorough review of the EIA when it is released. Lighthouse Point still needs you! Let’s work towards a better future for Lighthouse Point, Eleuthera, and our oceans.
