The Issue

Polygamy is when a person has more than one spouse. If the spouses are wives, the specific term is polygyny. If the spouses are husbands, the appropriate word is polyandry. Thus, polygyny and polyandry are two forms of polygamy.

“Laws are beautiful instruments that should be at the service of the people in any given society that has freedom at its human rights core. Laws shouldn't suffocate but instead should liberate. That is why they should be used to legalize what the human heart already strives towards in order to promote a real and lasting pursuit of happiness”.- Nicola DASANI (www.instagram.com/nico.dasani)

According to writer and academic Fredrik deBOER in an article in Politico, legalizing polygamy is the “most natural advance next step” in countries where it is currently outlawed. He argues: Given that many of us have argued, to great effect, that deference to tradition is not a legitimate reason to restrict marriage rights to groups that want them, the next step seems clear. We should turn our efforts towards the legal recognition of marriages between more than two partners. It’s time to legalize polygamy.

Polygamy is legal in only 58 out of nearly 200 sovereign countries, and in 0 states out of the 50 states in the USA.

Legalizing polygamy in America is the next big human rights fight.
