Save the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning

The Issue

The University of Leicester are carrying out consultations with staff and trade unions with a proposal for the closure of the Vaughan Centre for Lifelong Learning.

The Centre was founded over 150 years ago by Reverend David Vaughan for the working people of Leicester to give them access to learning, regardless of their social, economic or cultural backgrounds. In 2013, the University of Leicester forced the closure of the purpose-built facility in the city centre and the VCLL was moved onto the university campus. Amid concerns that the centre would lose its identity, assurances were given by the then Vice-Chancellor of the University that the move would protect the future of adult learning services. This future is now being threatened as the University is taking steps to completely close down the institution, thereby destroying the vision and heritage that Rev David Vaughan worked so hard to set up in 1862 and denying future generations the right to access adult education in Leicester.

We have started this petition in the hope that we can gain as much support as possible and to give everyone who is or has been connected with the Center a voice to appeal against this proposal and to urge the University of Leicester to reconsider.
