Dawgs Demand Better
The Issue
The University of Georgia, as the flagship public university of the state, can and must do more to combat systemic racism.
In response to the national outrage following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead released the statements below.
1. Neither statement clearly states that Black lives matter.
We the undersigned believe that Black lives matter.
2. Neither statement clearly acknowledges the University's historical relationship with slavery and white supremacy.
We the undersigned call on President Morehead to formally recognize and denounce the University of Georgia's ties to slavery and white supremacy.
3. Neither statement clearly outlines steps the University will take to fight racism on its campuses.
We the undersigned demand that President Morehead transparently develop and implement specific measures to:
- combat racism within its community and the state it serves,
- educate all faculty, staff, and students on the histories and experiences of people of color, and
- protect and serve the Black community at UGA.
