The University of Arkansas must Declare a Student Housing Crisis!
The Issue
Students for an Equitable and Livable Future knows that the housing crisis in Fayetteville significantly impacts both community members and students at the University of Arkansas. AND - we want to make REAL CHANGE.
WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The record enrollment at the University has led to severe overcrowding, resulting in increased housing prices as students and local residents compete for limited living spaces. This situation forces some individuals into unsafe living conditions or homelessness, undermining their well-being and security. Additionally, students face challenges in securing affordable housing, which further exacerbates the strain on students' academic experiences and community integration.
WHY NOW?
If the current situation persists, the consequences will be dire for both the Fayetteville community and the University’s students. Unaffordable housing and overcrowded dorms will continue to hinder students from fully engaging in their educational experience at the University of Arkansas. The lack of adequate living conditions can lead to a decline in student satisfaction and success, while the community may suffer from increased homelessness and social instability. The overall quality of life in Fayetteville could deteriorate, affecting the local livability and the University’s reputation.
CALL TO ACTION!
Immediate action is crucial to address the housing crisis and ensure equitable living opportunities for all students. With a projected 4.6% increase in enrollment, bringing the total to 33,610 students for Fall 2024, the University must re-evaluate its admissions policies and infrastructure to accommodate this growth. Delaying action will only exacerbate the current issues, leading to further overcrowding and heightened competition for housing. By prioritizing adequate housing as a basic human right, the University can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students and community members.
