Asking the United Nations to disseminate the values agreed upon by 193 countries in 1945 is a means by which many citizens of the world can consciously adhere to those principles, unite around them, defend them, and oppose the actions of despotic power wherever it may manifest itself.
Over the coming weeks, I will invite you to reflect on a fundamental idea: principles very similar to those that justified the creation of the United Nations can also be discerned in the long evolution of our planet.
To prepare ourselves to consider this line of reasoning, it is worth recalling an essential fact: human beings have been present for only approximately 0.004% of the Earth’s existence, and we lack the capacity to alter the major trends of its evolution.
Even in the extreme scenario of a nuclear war that destroyed a large part of living beings, life would re-emerge, as it already did after the five great mass extinctions, which began some 440 million years ago and concluded 66 million years ago. Life has always been reborn.
We do not know with certainty why this occurs, but what is beyond dispute is that we are part of a system (the Earth) that follows certain fundamental trends. I have identified ten of them, which I will gradually submit to your consideration.
The first of these trends is the propensity to create life. In the beginning, the Earth was a ball of fire, and today it is a beautiful planet teeming with life. Why do certain humans insist on destroying it? Does it make any sense to go against a trend that has been developing over 4.5 billion years? What do despotic rulers hope to achieve by exterminating the citizens of the world?
Happy 2026
