Dear river supporter,

You may have seen the news today that Government has bowed to pressure from house building lobbyists and are talking about scrapping ‘nutrient neutrality rules’. These rules provide a glimmer of hope for some of our most protected rivers by ensuring development does not further add to pollution of rivers. Without them, developers can build freely without having to off-set the pollution they will create. New houses will put more pressure on the waterways and there’ll be no ways to make polluters pay for the damage. Today, the future of rivers look very bleak.

How dare the government ignore us, the public, who are up in arms about river pollution on a daily basis.

It is absolutely absurd for the government to roll back on this when Britain’s rivers are dying. They are overflowing with harmful levels of nutrients from agricultural, sewage and chemical pollution, killing aquatic life from the Tyne to the Tamar.

This is just the latest in a series of deregulation decisions that puts profits over nature.
