Last week at the NASCO meeting in France in dealing with the NASCO papers CNL(14)49 and CNL(14)50, finally the Scottish government had to recognise and acknowledge the mixed-stock nature of salmon management in Scotland, and its failures to achieve Conservation Limits. Satisfactory levels could only be found on three sites on just two of Scotland ́s 398 identified salmon rivers.
Failure over a great many years to accept a problem, and deflect the real issues have ended with poor management and decision making.
Truly shocking that it had to get to this. Personally I feel a great many civil service heads should roll as they have buried their heads in the sand over this for years.
I can only hope that now, finally, the government will have the nerve to sack its advisors and begin to properly manage this wonderful "global resource" bringing back some credibility to Scotland as a country leading the way in making difficult 21st century decisions.
