Our Petition asked the Scottish Government to intervene and help reverse the decision by the Salmon Net Fishing Association of Scotland [SNFAS] to resume net fishing in the spring after a 14 year voluntary cessation.
There was no netting during this period in 2014.
Although we cannot say the war against the netting of wild salmon has been won, we can, in small part, claim victory in this important opening skirmish! There was no netting in the first months of 2014. However, it would seem those with netting interests wish to extend their season into September and beyond to exploit what they think is a healthy population. Given abysmal runs of Spring and Summer salmon again this year, the Government and its advisors must now accept there is in fact a problem and take action to stop this absurdity which makes no sense in any way, shape or form.
It is the remit of our government to – “Only support the netting of wild salmon when” a "Harvestable Surplus Occurs"! Anyone working or visiting any Scottish river over the last few years will know this is now not the case at “ANY” time of the year.
Mr Wheelhouse MSP – Please listen to the voice of reason and your people. Our jobs and Livelihoods are in serious jeopardy. Anglers are about to leave Scotland in droves because of this mismanagement. You have an obligation to both the people of Scotland and to your EU partners to look after this species. IT’S DYING IN FRONT OF YOU AND ON YOUR WATCH.
The job however, is much bigger than just here in Scotland, wild salmon must also be protected all over the North Atlantic. It frustrates me so much to hear my country being labelled as some sort of pariah when we have invested so much time, effort and money into this fish.
To all supporters and every organisation linked to Atlantic salmon - The time for action is now and although a great many people are saying it’s already too late, believe me, it’s not, but we now need to unite behind a common cause, namely, the “protection” of those remaining fish both in fresh and salt water.
The first phase of this campaign was to get the attention of both netsmen and the Scottish Government, something which it most definitely did. Phase two will now involve our European and American neighbours to apply real pressure at key times on our Government to ensure an all out ban on the netting of wild salmon per se, thus affording this Iconic species the protection it deserves.
Please, please keep supporting this cause by spreading the word via social media. United with one goal!
Progress updates will be posted on our Facebook Page at - https://www.facebook.com/protectwildsalmon?ref=hl
Again, a great many thanks to all who signed and please support phase two.
