Last year you helped us remove the charges to play in Hyde Park. But now the Royal Parks want to try to sneak them back and we have just one month to stop it. We need your help! This summer hundreds of people have been in the park enjoying sport for free. This couldn’t have happened without your help which meant that his time last year the Royal Parks had to remove their unlawful charges. Whilst some group been using a booking system, which the Royal Parks pays a private company to run, the majority of us have been working together to share the space so we can all enjoy Hyde Park. The way it’s always been and how parks should be. But the Royal Parks want to bring charges back on of the last remaining free areas to play sport in London. We can’t let this happen! They tried last October but their survey, which aimed to justify charging, was so flawed and biased it would have been unlawful for them to use it to bring in fees. Still, an incredible 87% of people who responded said that charging for sport was unrealistic. But according to the Royal Parks this isn’t ‘statistically significant’ and now they are trying again. So we need to shout louder and leave them in no doubt that we won’t accept charges to play sport or private company managing the area. This week they opened a new consultation, taking on board all the previous errors in their process that our lawyers had to highlight. They’ve set out a number of proposals, which can be found here http://bit.ly/HydeParkProposals but want to bring back charges to the majority of the space. We don’t think this right. It’ll tear the community who use the area apart. It even costs the Royal Parks more than leaving it free to use. That’s why we will be responding by backing option 1, that the space remains free from fees and private management companies.
