Replace Chelsea-based statue of slaver Hans Sloane with statue of Hasselbaink & Gudjohnsen

The Issue

In 2007, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the Cadogan Estate decided to commemorate the life of slave-profiteer Hans Sloane with a statue.

Currently located in Chelsea, the statue pays homage to the physician, who after marrying into a slaving family, funded his research with proceeds from their plantations. Sloane also worked on the plantation and experimented with slaves, both alive and deceased, and once described black slaves as 'a very perverse generation of people.'

We want to replace this statue with one featuring two other Chelsea greats, albeit two with less chequered pasts – Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The two strikers joined Chelsea in 2000 and the pair, dubbed 'fire and ice', quickly merged into one of the most potent strike partnerships in Premier League history.

A statue commemorating this iconic duo would act as a symbol of racial unity, reminding people of the great things that can be achieved when black and white work together.

“We couldn’t look more different – a black Dutch guy from Suriname and a blond boy from Iceland – but we are quite similar” – Jimmy Floyd Hassebaink
