Dear The Right Honorable Justin Trudeau, Honorable Minister Melanie Joly:

The Canadian Tamil Community would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Honourable Minister Melanie Joly for her appointment as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The following is an open letter addressed to the Canadian Government with respect to the demand for justice for Sri Lanka's Genocide against the Tamils. In the past, the Tamil Community has written several letters concerning the subject matter. Furthermore, recently, we have also submitted this petition with 6000 signatures on February 17, 2021. The petition has already been signed by over 16 thousand Canadian citizens and Tamil Diaspora worldwide is enclosed with this letter.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in January 2021, advised member states to become involved in working to the principle of universal jurisdiction to initiate prosecutions in foreign domestic courts, and by taking steps toward seeking justice at the international level, including at the International Criminal Court.

We thank our Canadian government for unanimously passing the motion on June 19, 2019, to “call upon the United Nations to establish an international, independent investigation into allegations of genocide against Tamils committed in Sri Lanka”. Tamils in Canada find this motion as a renewed hope to deliver justice for the victims of the Tamil genocide and we urge our government to take initiatives to investigate and recognize the Tamil Genocide.

Hence, we respectfully demand the Canadian Government to recognize the Tamil Genocide as requested by the petition (please refer to the link below for the petition).

In line with Canadian values, we hope that our Government will stand with the victims of genocide and act against perpetrators of genocide.
