The Queensland Liberals want to criminalize abortion - they aren’t fit for office in 2024

The issue

In 2020, I found myself in the heartbreaking situation of requiring an abortion.

Devastatingly, at 10 weeks my baby’s heartbeat had stopped, and my pregnancy and was no longer viable. My body was experiencing a “missed miscarriage”; to avoid becoming incredibly unwell or septic, I needed mifepristone (the abortion medication). Thankfully, I was legally able to access medical care, but it could have been different.

Until 2018, abortion was a criminal offense in Queensland.

When, in 2018 legislation was introduced to dicriminalize abortion, David Crisafulli, Jarrod Bleijie and Tim Mander voted AGAINST this bill. Against women.

All three of these LNP men are up for election in QLD in 2 weeks - David Crisafulli is the leader of the LNP in Queensland, and Jarrod Bleijie is his deputy.

Men who vote against the bodily autonomy of women are not fit for office and should step down and apologize for insulting the humanity of half the population. We cannot trust that they will not walk back more rights of women should they gain office.

According to the World Health Organization, 25 million unsafe abortions occurred every year between 2010 and 2014 globally, and these are predominantly in places where abortion is heavily restricted or criminalized. Women are forced into dangerous situations due to the lack of legal protections (WHO, 2017).

We cannot allow this to happen to Queensland. It is time to hold accountable the officials who supported removing women’s autonomy.

We call for them to step down, apologize to the women they represent and be held ineligible for election in the upcoming 2024 vote.

This is not just about holding our politicians accountable, but also about advocating for the fundamental rights of all women who should have the freedom to make decisions regarding their health and bodies.

Please stand in solidarity with women across Queensland and sign this petition, demanding better from our elected officials.
