The surge in violence between Israel and Hamas since October 7 has resulted in massive civilian casualties in Israel and Gaza. The military attacks on Gaza have rapidly escalated to an unimaginable catastrophe. According to Save the Children, over 4,000 children have been killed over 4 weeks, surpassing the annual death toll of children in the world’s conflict zones since 2019. As reported by Medicins Sans Frontiers, over 2 million people are currently trapped in Gaza without access to food, clean water, electricity, and medicine. This has obvious consequences on the civilians and health care workers in the remaining health care facilities. Many hospitals and healthcare facilities have been damaged or destroyed and due to lack of fuel and supplies, availability of life saving healthcare is limited.
I invite all healthcare workers to sign this petition calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. We strongly urge the Australian government to push for a ceasefire and to support aid and assistance to the Gazan people. Healthcare means upholding human rights for all people.
