The petition, with 1.4 million signatures was delivered to Senator Mehreen Faruqi yesterday.

Senator Faruqi is the first female Muslim senator in Australia, and delivered a powerful speech on the importance of resisting racism and bigotry.

She will present the petition to parliament where it can be considered by our elected officials.  The Greens intend to attempt to have Fraser Anning suspended for his grossly insensitive and divisive words.

Regardless of the outcome, I’m proud that so many of us have not walked by and accepted discrimination.  Mobilising 1.4 million people to speak as one voice has had a powerful effect on the level of discourse around immigration and our Muslim community.
