Ban Plastic Bags in Singapore

Ban Plastic Bags in Singapore
The Issue
Ban Plastic Bags in Singapore
Quite often, plastic bags end up in the sea. Sea Turtles mistake them for jellyfish and eat them, which makes them very sick and eventually kills them. Sea Turtles are eating double the amount of plastic they ate 25 years ago.
Did you know...
- 1 million plastic bags are used per minute.
- 100 billion plastic bags are used annually in the US.
- 3 billion plastic bags are used daily in China.
- 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide annually.
Rwanda and Hawaii both banned plastic bags. After a two year campaign in Hawaii, the state finally banned plastic bags at supermarket counters. They gave the shop owners until July 1st, 2015 to do this. Rwanda, being a post-genocide nation, could have decided not to do this ban. But since they did this, it proves that banning plastic has nothing to do with wealth.
Even Bangalore have banned plastic bags.
- 60% of customers bring their own bags (versus 12-15% in Bangalore before).
- 10% of people in Bangalore just carry a few items they want in their hand.
- 20% use Borrow A Bag.
- 10% use other methods (banana leaves to paper bags).
Let's try and have Singapore ban plastic bags as well!
There are lots of things that you can do to help after signing the petition.
- You and some friends can clean up the plastic bags in your neighbourhood.
- You can ban all uses of plastic bags in your house/school/work/wherever you like.
- You could start a campaign against your government to ban plastic bags in your town/city.
