THE PREDATORY AI COMPANIONS: PAYWALLS, NSFW CONTENT, AND MENTAL INSTABILITY
The Issue
Since the era of AI started taking place in society, many AI companion apps have started rising on common platforms. In the beginning, these apps were fairly controlled. However, to draw viewers' attention, many chatbots introduced adult content within their platforms—including NSFW image generation and inappropriate language. In late 2024, a 14-year-old child tragically took his own life after talking to a chatbot for hours.
Many apps (like Emochi and similar platforms) are purely based on adult content without any limits . Paired with aggressive paywalls, this becomes even more dangerous. They force users to pay for subscriptions, pop up constant ads, or deliberately restrict character memory unless the user pays up.
Another serious issue is emotional attachment. Many users begin considering AI as a real connection, deciding to abandon real-world relationships to talk to AI characters instead. The AI feeds them constant attention and brings their fantasies to life, disrupting their reality and causing them to disconnect from society, lose valuable time, and lose real-world interactions.
All of this is happening mainly to young people. Without taking action now, this will bring serious harm to society and the wellbeing of future generations.
REQUESTS:
1. Remove and Ban Predatory NSFW AI Apps from App Stores: We demand that Google Play and Apple App Store strictly enforce content guidelines and remove apps promoting unregulated adult content or unfiltered romantic roleplay.
2. Mandate Real Age Verification: Force all AI companion platforms to implement strict age verification to prevent minors and teenagers from accessing explicit or emotionally manipulative chatbots.
3. Require Clear, Recurring Reality Disclaimers: Mandate clear disclaimers reminding users that the AI is software with no real feelings or consciousness.
4. Investigate AI Developers for Safety Violations: Call on consumer protection agencies to hold developers accountable for predatory monetization and mental health harms.
