For those who have never heard of kimchi or ssam, a typical kimchi is a dish that is fermented after mixing salted cabbage or radish with seasoning such as red pepper powder, green onions, and garlic. And ssam is a dish that you enjoy by laying rice, meat and side dishes on a leaf of lettuce(or cabbage, sesame leaf, pumpkin leaf, and so on) and wrap the whole thing and eat at one go. These two dishes all come from Korea and have been parts of Korean culture for a long time.

 

But recently, there have been people who stubbornly persist that kimch and ssam are not part of Korean food and culture.

 

They are Chinese netizens.

 

Chinese netizens have been persisting that Korean food culture are from China by fabricating and distorting on the internet. Furthermore, they are insulting and condemning those who are enjoying Korean food.

 

Regarding a YouTube video of a Korean YouTuber eating kimchi and ssam, Chinese netizens claimed that the YouTuber stole Chinese culture, and they committed cyber terrorism, leaving malicious comments such as 'Piss off, you YouTubers who claim that ssam and kimchi are from Korea.'

 

Even more embarrassing, a Chinese media company(上海素贤广告传媒有限公司) that was working with the YouTuber suddenly unilaterally terminated the contract with the YouTuber. The notice of termination is also ridiculous. The company stated that 'the YouTuber caused bad influence on the Chinese public, so the company has decided to terminate all cooperation with the YouTuber. Our company is firmly opposed to any acts of insulting China, and it also resolutely safeguards the dignity of our country and the people from the ones insulting China's attitudes and remarks.'

 

We cannot really understand what content in the video of a Korean YouTuber eating Korean food has seriously given adverse affects to China, insulted China, or harmed the dignity of the Chinese people.

 

But what is obvious is that Chinese netizens and the company are trying to steal Korea's native food culture and claiming that kimchi and ssam are native food cultures of China.

 

This is not the first time in China's acts of stealing Korean culture and claiming that Korean culture belongs to Chinese. China has already distorted the history of Goguryeo and Balhae as the history of China for decades and has been promoting these to the world as their own history. China has been insisting various historical and cultural distortions as the following: Hanbok is a Chinese traditional attire, Taegeukgi (national flag of Korea) was invented by a Chinese, Korean children's song and folk song are Chinese songs, and world-class football player Son Heung-min's ancestors are Chinese.

 

This is a form of chauvinism and Zhounghua(Chinese) nationalism merged together, and in reality beyond cyberspace, these actions and claims are being blatantly conducted by China.

 

We condemn Chinese netizens, Chinese companies, and the Chinese government for blatant acts to steal Korean culture!

 

If China continues to blindly manipulate and distort Korean culture as its own, China will surely lose trust from the entire world. If China continues to steal like this, the world will brand China as 'a thief who steals Korean culture'.

더욱 황당한 것은 해당 유튜버와 협업하던 중국의 한 미디어 회사(上海素贤广告传媒有限公司)는 돌연 해당 유튜버와의 계약을 일방적으로 해지했습니다. 그 해지 공고 또한 얼토당토하지 않은 내용입니다. ‘최근 해당 유튜버가 중국 내 매우 심각한 악영향을 끼쳐 모든 협력을 종료한다.’며 ‘우리 회사는 중국에 대한 모욕을 단호히 반대하며, 모든 모욕적 태도와 발언으로부터 나라와 국민의 존엄성을 보호할 것이다.’라며 해당 유튜버가 중국을 욕보였다고 주장했습니다.

 

한국인 유튜버가 한국 음식을 먹는 영상 중의 어떤 내용이 중국 내에 심각한 악영향을 주거나 중국에 대해 모욕을 했는지, 혹은 중국 국민의 존엄성을 해쳤는지 우리는 도무지 이해 할 수 없는 내용입니다.

 

하지만 무엇보다 명백한 것은 중국 네티즌들과 그 회사가 한국의 고유 식문화를 훔치려고 하면서 김치와 쌈이 중국의 고유 식문화라고 주장하려고 하고 있다는 것입니다.

이는 중국의 맹목적 국수주의와 중화 민족주의가 결합한 것으로, 사이버 공간을 넘어 현실 속에서도 중국에 의해 이러한 행위와 주장들이 노골적으로 전개되고 있습니다.

 

우리는 중국 네티즌들과 중국 기업들, 나아가 중국 정부까지 개입하며 노골적으로 한국의 문화를 도적질하려는 행위를 규탄합니다!
