The Issue

Louis' Restaurant, a historic establishment located at Lands End in San Francisco, remains unoccupied since its Covid closure.  This leaves a void in the local community and the scenic Lands End area.  There are no excuses for the National Park Service (NPS) administrators here in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) to have failed to act for over five years to simply issue a Request For Proposal (RFP) to find a suitable lessee to restore this iconic treasure.

Louis' was established in 1937 and from that time until its forced closure due to Covid in July 2020, it was operated by several generations of the local Hontalas family.  Since 2022, NPS has been constantly promising to issue an RFP.  Yet, even after acknowledging GGNRA's many other challenges in the era, the failure of NPS and GGNRA Superintendent David Smith to issue the RFP is flatly unacceptable.

The speedy issuance of an RFP is necessary to ensure that the abandoned restaurant, currently vandalized and boarded up, does not fall further into dilapidation or risk burglary or arson.  Its ever-worsening condition will make its eventual lease only more challenging and costly.   By taking this immediate step  --  which need not be overly-legalistic or bureaucratic or costly and cumbersome  --  NPS can attract potential bidders, some of whom have already expressed interest in this beloved landmark.

Louis' Restaurant has been a cherished spot for both locals and tourists visiting Lands End, offering spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and an inviting atmosphere.  Its closure has not only stripped San Francisco of an important cultural and historical asset, but has also negatively impacted local tourism and the local economy.  Reviving Louis' will provide employment opportunities and enhance visitors' experiences in this stunning setting.

We urge NPS to act swiftly to preserve Louis' by immediately issuing a simple and straightforward RFP.  Your signature can help ensure that the spirit and legacy of Louis' live on.  Please sign the petition today to support the swift action needed to bring back this iconic restaurant to its rightful place in our community, and circulate this petition to others.
