We demand the Oxford Union rescind their invitation to Marine Le Pen to speak at the Union on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and apologise for the insult this has caused to the memory of the millions people killed by the Nazis
The Issue
We the undersigned, being Oxford citizens, students, academics, and other interested parties across the world, want to register our dismay and anger at the decision of the Oxford Union to invite the French fascist leader Marine Le Pen to speak at the Union. Le Pen is not just another politician with right-wing views but one who stands in the tradition of Adolf Hitler. For the Oxford Union to have invited her to speak on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, whether by design or ignorance, is particularly shocking, and an insult to the memory of the six million Jews and many millions of others - e.g. disabled people, homosexuals, Roma, Slavs, anti-fascists, etc - who died in Auschwitz and similar death camps. At a time when the Front National is getting a third of the votes in recent French elections and other fascist parties are growing across Europe, it is also a highly dangerous gesture, in giving legitimacy to a politician with a long history of inciting racial hatred. We therefore call on the Oxford Union to rescind their invitation to Le Pen to speak at the Union, and to apologise for the insult the invitation has caused to the memory of those who died in the Nazi death camps, to the survivors of those camps, and to the relatives of those who died. Moreover, we call on the Oxford Union to invite a Holocaust survivor to the Union, not to debate, but so that they can explain to Union members about the true reality of fascism and what took place in death camps like Auschwitz, and why providing a platform of respectability to Nazis like Le Pen is a huge mistake. This petition was initiated by Oxford Unite Against Fascism and supported by DWP Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire PCS branch. Please join the demonstration against Le Pen at the Oxford Union, St Michael's Street, off Cornmarket, Oxford, OX1 2DU, on Thursday 5th February, at 5pm.
