Researching museums that focus on slavery, I discovered the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool, England. Liverpool was the largest slave trade port in Europe during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The museum there offers an educational experience about the cruelty and injustice of human trafficking without using a fully-functional slave ship replica that sails port waters. You will find a link to that museum's website on the Facebook page. Like the museum proposed for New Orleans, the Liverpool museum also champions the eradication of modern slavery. That's a good thing. So, the problem with the proposed New Orleans project is not its mission to educate visitors about the past and present slave trade. The problem is some of the methods proposed to achieve that mission. It's impossible to replicate the horrific experience of the Middle Passage, so a life-sized slave ship replica sailing the Mississippi would be no more than a tourism vehicle.
