Dear Residents and Supporters,
Last Wednesday, at the County Commission meeting, the Chairman’s Policy Committee discussed a Resolution to build a more modern Garbage Incinerator facility on land close to the current Covanta facility. The Resolution REQUIRED the new facility be built next to the current Covanta-run facility and only on that location – still in our City of Doral. If the Resolution passed as it was initially presented, the new facility would have to be built in our City. Almost 2 dozen residents and supporters appeared at this meeting, many spoke and told their story urging the Committee to oppose this Resolution. In the end, an Amendment was approved, allowing the County to consider another “similar site, that meets all the land use, zoning and permitting requirements”. It is difficult to see this as a clear win or a clear loss. What is clear, however, is that THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER and we need to STAY INFORMED, VIGILANT AND PROACTIVE. There is no question the only way we will be heard is if we SHOW UP IN NUMBERS. In the coming weeks, the County Commission will meet again on this issue. We may not receive more than 3 days’ notice before this meeting is held. The Doral Community Coalition will continue to gather information and update supporters.

Estimados residentes y simpatizantes,
El miércoles pasado, en la reunión de la Comisión del Condado, el Comité de Políticas del Presidente discutió una Resolución para construir una instalación de Incinerador de Basura más moderna en un terreno cercano a la instalación actual de Covanta. La Resolución REQUIERE que la nueva instalación se construyera al lado de la instalación actual administrada por Covanta y solo en esa ubicación, todavía en nuestra Ciudad de Doral. De aprobarse la Resolución tal como se presentó inicialmente, se tendría que construir la nueva instalación en nuestra Ciudad. Casi 2 docenas de residentes y simpatizantes aparecieron en esta reunión, muchos hablaron y contaron su historia instando al Comité a oponerse a esta Resolución. Al final, se aprobó una enmienda que permite al condado considerar otro “sitio similar, que cumpla con todos los requisitos de uso de suelo, zonificación y permisos”. Es difícil ver esto como una clara victoria o una clara pérdida. Sin embargo, lo que está claro es que ESTA LUCHA NO HA TERMINADO y debemos MANTENERNOS INFORMADOS, VIGILANTES Y PROACTIVOS. No hay duda de que la única forma en que seremos escuchados es si NOS PRESENTAMOS EN NÚMEROS. En las próximas semanas, la Comisión del Condado se reunirá nuevamente sobre este tema. Es posible que no recibamos más de 3 días de aviso antes de que se presenta esta reunión. El Doral Community Coalition continuará recopilando información y actualizando a los partidarios.
