To allow the Myxomatosis Vaccine into Australia

We ask the LNP Government & The Hon Barnaby Joyce MP for Agriculture, to allow the Myxomatosis vaccine into Australia, as a prescription drug through qualified veterinarians for desexed pet rabbits. There are many responsible rabbit owners in Australia who risk losing their pet because the Myxomatosis vaccine is not allowed into Australia. Myxomatosis is a virus that is spread by mosquitos, fleas and infected rabbits. It causes their eyes to swell and results in a slow, painful death. Due to the threat wild rabbits pose to our natural biodiversity, we fully support the current measures, however, request that our neutered pet rabbits be allowed the vaccine. This way, our pet rabbits will not pass on their immunity to Myxomatosis. Unfortunately, many pet rabbits are facing this horrible death. In April 2015, the Big Ears Animal Sanctuary in Tasmania had a severe outbreak, putting all their 200 rabbits at risk. Despite the sanctuary’s rabbits being neutered and vaccinated against Calicivirus, they cannot be protected from the excruciating effects of Myxomatosis. In all, we request the Myxomatosis vaccine be provided as a prescription drug through qualified veterinarians, for desexed pet rabbits that are vaccinated for Calicivirus. Please sign this petition to help keep our pet bunnies safe. Thank you, Marjorie Prettyman
