Petition to Essex County Council: Urgent Road Safety Improvements for The Knares, Langdon Hills
We, the Resident, call upon Essex County Council and Essex Highways to urgently review and fast-track measures to improve road safety, accessibility and traffic management on The Knares, Langdon Hills, particularly between Lee Chapel Primary School and the junction with Nethermayne.
Parking along The Knares regularly occurs on both sides of the road, significantly reducing the available carriageway width. This can leave vehicles attempting to pass through a narrow and obstructed route, creating conflict between opposing traffic, reducing visibility and causing particular difficulties for larger vehicles.
The situation has now become serious enough to affect local public transport, with the local bus service no longer travelling along the road because of safety concerns. This has a direct impact on residents who depend upon public transport, including older people, people with limited mobility and residents without access to a car.
A proposed solution has already been developed for consideration: introducing a coordinated parking and waiting-restriction scheme between Lee Chapel Primary School and Nethermayne, with a no-waiting restriction on one side of The Knares and clearly marked parking bays on the opposite side. The proposal aims to retain approximately 80 parking spaces, subject to survey, safety assessment and detailed highway design.
This would help create a clearer and more predictable running lane while retaining organised parking for residents and protecting junctions, accesses, dropped kerbs and areas where visibility must be maintained.
We therefore ask Essex County Council and Essex Highways to:
Treat the situation on The Knares as an urgent road-safety and public-transport-access issue.
Fast-track an assessment of the proposed parking and waiting-restriction scheme.
Carry out the necessary site inspection, road measurements, parking assessment and safety review at the earliest opportunity.
Progress an appropriate Traffic Regulation Order and associated highway measures as quickly as reasonably possible if the assessment supports the proposed scheme.
Keep residents informed of the assessment, proposed solution and expected timetable for action
