Save DC’s Buzzard Point Marina!
Save DC’s Buzzard Point Marina!
The Issue
Buzzard Point is an historic DC marina dating over 50 years, and has allowed DC boaters easy access to the water and to affordable boating for generations.
Letters were sent to boat owners in early September 2015 informing them that the marina is slated to close December 31, 2015. [NPS press release <http://www.nps.gov/anac/learn/news/buzzard-point-marina-closing.htm>] There are few other affordable and accessible nearby options for Buzzard Point boaters in DC to dock their 58 boats, which will likely force many to sell or move farther outside the District.
The National Park Service (NPS) owns the site yet has repeatedly denied marina management permission to invest further in the marina, and now claims that it must close the marina due to safety and delayed maintenance.
While NPS promises to engage the community on the future of the marina after it is decommissioned, to date there has been zero public engagement solicited by NPS when deciding to shut it down, and zero transparency in decision-making. We expect more from our democratic institutions, and Buzzard Point boat owners and our allies across the city are ready and willing to actively engage with NPS to discuss how to keep the marina open.
