Dear all who have signed the “Introduce Secondary Supply Laws in WA Petition” on Change.org, After 20 months of solid campaigning, several letters to the WA Government and the successful lodgment of the Secondary Supply Petition in Parliament by Mr Peter Abetz MLA, the Barnett Government announced today that Secondary Supply Laws would be legislated early in 2015. This has now brought WA into line with most other jurisdictions in Australia and sends a strong message that the supply of alcohol to other people’s kids without parental permission will not be tolerated. This will enable parents to say "no" and have the backing of the law to support their decision. Once an adult has the permission to supply alcohol they will need to do so in a “responsible” manner ensuring the young person is not able to drink alcohol at a level that can put themselves and or others at harm. This is a fantastic commitment by the Western Australian Government to reduce harm from alcohol to young people. It also supports the new Alcohol Think Again “Parents, Young People and Alcohol ‘I See’ campaign, targeting parental supply of alcohol to under 18s. Although the process was lengthy, Secondary Supply Legislation was thoroughly researched before this decision was made. I thank the Western Australian community for supporting the petition and for giving me all the incentive I needed to continue with this campaign. I also thank those who shared stories with me of secondary supply and I pushed on because of these stories. I would like to also acknowledge and express my gratitude to all in the public health sector and others in government and elsewhere who have tirelessly been campaigning for secondary supply laws previous to the petition being launched. Without all of us working on the goal to reduce harm from alcohol to our young people this law would never have come to fruition. I will keep in touch re the progress of the new legislation and will keep the petition up online until the legislation has been introduced. I will always be campaigning hard to protect our young people from alcohol related harm. Secondary Supply Legislation is part of the comprehensive approach we need that also targets the advertising, promotion and price of alcohol as well as the sale of alcohol to minors from alcohol retail outlets due to inadequate identification checks.
