Today, our Governor-General awarded Dr Harris and Dr Challen with two significant medals within the General Division of the Order of Australia. Firstly, along with six members of the AFP and a Navy Diver, Richard and Craig were awarded the Order of Australia Medal, or OAM. Then, these two incredible men were honoured with the Star of Courage - the second-highest bravery decoration in the Australian Honours system. Whilst this falls one small step short of our original goal to see both men recognised with the Cross of Valour, it is nonetheless a very significant honour, one befitting the effort, courage and bravery these heroes displayed in Thailand. The AFP and Navy personnel were also recognised with the Australian Bravery Medal. Thank you to everyone who kept this alive over the past ten or so days - whilst I’ve no doubt these men would have been recognised without this petition, it gave us a voice and I’m informed that it was noticed at very senior levels within our parliament, and at Government House.
