The Future of Command & Conquer: An Open Letter to EA

The Issue

The Command & Conquer series is more than just a game; it's a defining pillar of the real-time strategy (RTS) genre and a cherished part of gaming history. While recent remasters have rekindled our love for the franchise, there is growing concern among fans about the direction of future titles, particularly with the introduction of monetization practices that detract from the core gameplay experience.

Inspired by recent discussions within the Command & Conquer community, we are coming together to urge Electronic Arts (EA) to either collaborate with Petroglyph Games on new projects or consider transferring the franchise back to them. We believe this is the best path to preserving the legacy of Command & Conquer.

Below is our open letter to EA, which we invite you to read and support by signing this petition. Together, we can show EA that the Command & Conquer community is united and eager for a future that honors the franchise’s roots.

Open Letter to Electronic Arts: The Future of Command & Conquer

Dear Electronic Arts,

We, the undersigned, are writing to you as passionate and dedicated fans of the Command & Conquer franchise, a series that has defined the real-time strategy (RTS) genre and captured the imaginations of gamers for decades. The recent remasters of Command & Conquer and Red Alert, developed by Petroglyph Games in collaboration with Lemon Sky Studios, have been met with critical acclaim and fan enthusiasm. These remasters reminded us why we fell in love with the franchise in the first place and demonstrated that there is still a vibrant and engaged community eager for more Command & Conquer.

However, there is growing concern among the community about the direction of the franchise under EA’s stewardship. The introduction of microtransactions and time-limited events in recent titles, particularly in Command & Conquer: Rivals, has left many fans frustrated. These monetization practices have overshadowed the strategic gameplay that made Command & Conquer great, reducing the experience to a pay-to-win model that is a far cry from what fans expect from this iconic series.

The success of the remasters has shown us that Command & Conquer thrives when it is in the hands of those who understand its legacy. Petroglyph Games, a studio founded by the original developers of Command & Conquer at Westwood Studios, has proven they are the rightful stewards of this beloved series. We believe that any future Command & Conquer projects should either involve their expertise or, if EA is not interested in further development, the franchise should be sold back to Petroglyph so they can continue its legacy.

We do not want to see more mobile games with the Command & Conquer brand stamped on them, nor do we want the series to be reduced to a vehicle for microtransactions and other monetization strategies. Instead, we want to see new projects that respect the strategic depth, engaging gameplay, and rich narratives that made Command & Conquer a household name in the gaming community.

Our request is simple but heartfelt: Please consider the wishes of the Command & Conquer community when making decisions about the future of the franchise. Whether it’s through a continued partnership with Petroglyph Games to create new titles, or by transferring the franchise back to them entirely, we believe this is the path that will ensure Command & Conquer remains a beloved and respected series for years to come.

We are not asking for quick cash-grabs or thoughtless adaptations; we are asking for a return to form—games that embody the spirit of Command & Conquer and are made by those who understand and cherish it. The remasters showed us that this is possible, and we hope to see that commitment to quality continue.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We, the fans, are ready to support a brighter future for Command & Conquer, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Andy Gaffney
