Petition updateThe CTA Must Stop Laying Off Good Workers!Punished For Taking Care of His Family

As I exposed in a previous update, the CTA Second Chance workers are punished at twice the severity of all other CTA workers.

Yesterday I assisted a man who was written up for calling off work to care for his daughter that was in dire need of attention.

He protested the charges in writing:

"I was dealing with a family emergency. I don't understand why I'm being punished for taking care of my family. I let my supervisor know."

Another one was written up for a Safety Violation for slipping and getting hurt while performing "Exterior Wash" duties.

Ironically, he had repeatedly verbally warned management about the hazard which he fell victim to. Subsequently, a CTA job he was about to transition to—that would have put him a position of far less exploitation—was taken away from him.

To add insult to injury, Exterior Wash duties for Second Chance workers is not allowed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. As documented at my blog, I have been fighting to get this stopped.

A single mother of a sickly child is now scheduled for termination for a despicable complex trap of "cumulative" charges regarding absenteeism, unjust Procedure and Safety Violations.

Only the Second Chancers can be fired for "cumulative" charges.

I criticized the mismanager who gleefully demoralized these human beings for not putting any reasons for the absences as documented, commendations and positive feedback on their records

The Second Chance Program must be changed or be abolished. In its current form, it is essentially another form of incarceration or torture for vulnerable human beings.

The union presidents who signed off on this atrocity—Keith Hill and Ken Franklin—should be held accountable, charged and banned from the Amalgamated Transit Union for life.
