The Coalition to Save the Institute of Christ the King Church
Feb 22, 2016
Dear Friends of the Shrine
The last week or so has been very eventful for those engaged in saving the Shrine from demolition. There is a great deal of media activity, including a wonderful piece by Church Militant (http://www.churchmilitant.com/news/article/nearly-half-a-million-raised-to-save-chicago-shrine) and a beautiful video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jizGhExJ98g) by Navis Pictures. We are so very grateful to our friends who are stepping up in the media to support our efforts.
That, of course, includes our local news reporters, even when we are not thrilled with what we read. The Hyde Park Herald reported last week (http://hpherald.com/2016/02/18/archdiocese-secures-demolition-permit-for-shrine-of-christ/) that the Archdiocese picked up the demolition permit for the church. Meanwhile DNAinfo quotes the Archdiocese as looking into alternatives to demolition (https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160219/woodlawn/archdiocese-reconsidering-tearing-down-shrine-of-christ-king) . While these mixed messages can create anxiety among supporters of the Shrine, we must remain steadfast in our support and advocacy for the beautiful building the congregation calls home.
Please continue to show your support. Visit our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/savetheshrine/) and share the video from Regina with your friends. Also, encourage people you know to sign the petition. Also, if you live nearby, consider signing up for a Shrine vigil (http://doodle.com/poll/tzgnah6bkk5gdmcn). Even if you can only stay for a few minutes during any time period, the more people we have watching the building, the safer it will be.
Finally, please bear in mind that we are incurring expenses, such as copying and printing material and hiring videographers and photographers. Any contribution you can make would greatly support our efforts. Contributions to the GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/savetheshrine) currently on the Save the Shrine website do not go to the Archdiocese or the Institute. They are used strictly for advocacy and preservation of the church.
We have come far, but we have a long way to go! We would not be where we are today were it not for all of you - thank you and please stay strong in your faith.
In Solidarity,
The Coalition to Save the Shrine
