The Clancy Act
The Issue
Postpartum depression affects one in seven women, according to the American Psychological Association, transforming what should be a joyous new chapter into a perilous struggle. These early days after birth are critical, and without the proper mental health support, both mothers and their infants are at risk. We need to ensure that all new mothers are given the care and attention they deserve.
I propose mandatory psychological evaluations for all females towards the end of their pregnancy and before they are deemed fit to return home with their newborns. This would help in identifying those at high risk for postpartum depression, allowing mental health professionals to prioritize these women in need and offer them the necessary support promptly. By proactively addressing potential postpartum issues, we can prevent tragedies before they occur, giving new mothers and their children the opportunity to thrive.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 10-20% of women will experience significant mental health challenges during the first year after childbirth. With proper screening and intervention, we can reduce these figures substantially, saving lives and fostering healthier families.
By signing this petition, you are supporting an essential change to our healthcare protocols. You are advocating for a nation where new mothers are not left to fend for themselves in silence but are met with understanding and care. Help us create a future where postpartum depression isn’t sidelined but is addressed head-on with empathy and swift action.
Please sign and share this petition to demand mandatory postpartum mental health evaluations, ensuring a safer journey into motherhood for every woman. Your support can bring about change, offering hope and robust support systems to countless families.
