The pro-Israeli lobby was clear that the 1973 agreement between B'nai Brith and the United Church of Canada was about
1. shutting down Rev. Dr. Forrest and his writing on Palestine in the Observer, and
2. gaining the United Church’s assurance that the 1972 Saskatoon resolution would not be implemented.
In 1972, the church was ready to move forward to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau to raise concerns about the sale of Israeli bonds, and the $100 Million loan to Israel under the Canadian Export Development Corporation, among other things. The pro-Israel lobby was not about to let that happen.
The pro Israel lobby asked for and received assurances from the United Church leadership that the motions that had been approved by the grassroots at the General Council in Saskatoon in 1972 would not be implemented. This continued through the years, with motions being passed by the United Church but never implemented because no "nod" was given by the pro-Israel lobby.
It is time for the United Church of Canada to renounce their relations with the pro Israel lobby.
