Despite the clamor and vigilance of environment and health advocates, 29 out of 50 container vans filled with imported garbage from Canada have been disposed. The shipment has been in the Philippines for more than 700 days, incurring more than 15 Million Canadian dollars in losses due to storage and demurrage, including the newly discovered 48 container vans of mixed wastes.
Shame on you Canada! You have violated the international treaty - Basel Convention. Shame on you for not being dignified enough to collect your garbage. Shame on you for not having the accountability required of you as a signatory in the Basel Convention. Basel Convention does not allow transboundary movement of wastes and it is the exporting country’s responsibility to transport the contraband back to its country of origin.
Is this how you regard the treaties you signed? To blatantly turn back on your word when it’s inconvenient for you to abide by the conditions?
We appeal to the Canadian citizens to please raise this issue to your legislators and your politicians. No country should be treated as your dumping site.
