The Blixa Asteroid Campaign: A Cultural Tribute Among the Stars
We are calling on the global astronomy and cultural communities to honor the visionary artist Blixa Bargeld by naming an asteroid after him—a poetic gesture that fulfills a wish he voiced with cosmic irony and philosophical weight
“And I still expect an asteroid to be named after me. That’s how far I want to get. That’s what I call success.”
—Blixa Bargeld, quoted in conversation, 2024.
Blixa Bargeld, founder of the Industrial experimental sound pioneers Einstürzende Neubauten is one of the most innovative and influential sonic artists of the past 45 years. His work spans performance art, sound experimentation, cosmic philosophy, writing, cooking and cultural critique. His voice has become synonymous with the collapse and reassembly of language, cultural structures and sound itself.
In a moment of characteristically wry brilliance, Blixa once joked that true success would be having an asteroid named after him—“the asteroid Blixa”—one that might one day symbolically crash into Earth. This wasn’t a literal death wish. It was a poetic declaration from an artist who has spent his life embodying the tension between destruction and creation, silence and impact, stillness and seismic force.
We believe that naming a celestial body Bargeld or Blixa would:
• Honor a singular living artist with a legacy already written in cultural history.
• Celebrate the deep, ongoing connection between art, cosmology, and the human imagination.
• Fulfill a poetic wish—made not in ego, but in existential artistry.
• Inspire new interest in astronomy in the large, worldwide post punk music community.
There are thousands of unnamed asteroids currently in orbit. We are respectfully seeking to work with astronomers, observatories, or naming rights holders who may be open to lending a name to legacy. This petition is not just about a name—it’s about ensuring that culture leaves its mark in the cosmos, just as science does.
