To Protect BC's Lakes and Rivers

This petition had 1,344 supporters

British Columbia’s beloved lakes and rivers are facing a devastating, irreversible threat. The damage can be prevented, but only if we take swift action.

Zebra and quagga mussels, two closely-related invasive species, are wreaking havoc as they spread across North America. The mussels are spread by boats traveling from one waterway to another, so all it would take is one infected boat coming into our province to set off a disastrous chain of events in our freshwater.

Once infested, the beautiful waters of BC would be unrecognizable. Every surface - rocks, logs, docks, buoys, ropes, ladders, bridges, boats, and sandy lake bottoms - would be coated in a thick layer of sharp shells. Our beaches would lie under layers of foul-smelling dead mussels, the majority of our fish would be gone, and thousands of birds would be dead. Drinking water would be poisoned. Tourism would plummet. Our property values would go down while our taxes, power bills, and food costs would rise dramatically.

There is no known way to get rid of zebra or quagga mussels, so prevention is the ONLY solution.

On March 31st, the BC Government announced a new initiative to combat the incursion of zebra and quagga mussels. Three "roving" inspection teams are responsible for stopping some boats, some of the time. This solution is clearly inadequate. In order to protect our province, we MUST have PERMANENT, MANDATORY inspection stations stopping and checking EVERY boat at ALL of our border crossings.

With this petition, we are calling on the BC Provincial Government to INSTALL these inspection stations, as quickly as possible.

Please sign the petition and share it with everyone you know! If the mussels arrive in BC, there is no second chance.  Let’s keep BC mussel-free!
