On April 13, 2021, The Japanese Government has officially decided to release ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) treated water into the ocean at the TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.) 's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident. The ocean release policy was decided in contravention of the promise of TEPCO and local fishermen that "we will not take any action without the understanding of the people concerned" amid the opposition and concerns of the fishermen and the public.

“ALPS treated water” is treated from the radioactively contaminated water generated from the nuclear reactor that caused the nuclear accident, and is different from the tritiated water released from ordinary nuclear power stations. It is said that other than tritium can be removed by ALPS treatment, but in reality, the existence of nuclides other than tritium exceeding the standard value has been pointed out, and there are concerns about the impact on the marine environment. Ensuring safety, national understanding, fostering understanding of the international community, and measures against reputational damage remain major issues.

If ALPS treated water is released into the ocean, it can have a significant impact on the local economy and waste 10 years of efforts to recover from the disaster. Long-term ocean release over the next 30 years is unacceptable.

The road to completion of decommissioning, the Great East Japan Earthquake, and recovery from the nuclear accident remains uncertain for a long time. Efforts toward the decommissioning and reconstruction of nuclear power stations should be promoted with the understanding and trust of the people concerned and the public.

In order to pass on the rich ocean to the next generation, we request that ALPS treated water be treated by another method that can be understood by the people concerned and the public, regardless of the release to the ocean.

ALPS treated water containing tritium, etc. at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station should not be released into the ocean and should be treated by another method that can be understood by the people concerned and the public.
