My latest blog on the Huffington Post. First Past the Post leads to minority rule where a select few wield power over the rest of the population. South Africa in 1948 used the First Past the Post system and dd not allow non-white citizens to vote. This meant a tiny, privileged, minority were allowed to control the country. Even amongst the white population of South Africa, the pro-apartheid National Party did not win most of the votes. Due to FPTP, however, the National Party formed a majority government and put in place a stringent set of racist laws segregating black and white South Africans. Give it a read!
