Oct 17 Saanich Election and "What Changed? Tillicum Road and the Remaking of Saanich’s Streets"

The Oct 17, 2026 election for Saanich Council is only 4 days away.  Advance polling has already begun and is underway.  This petition that McKenzie Ave and Quadra St. (Saanich), not be reduced to single lanes on either side, which has received well over 6000 signatures - played a key role in having the critically flawed transportation typologies thrown out of the Quadra/McKenzie Plan.

It is crucial however that similar mistakes are not made in planning across Saanich.  The only way to ensure that is at the polls by electing a council that will not go down this same road, pardon the pun.

Myself Sasha Izard, the petition's creator am running for a seat on Saanich Council, and if elected will do everything that I can to ensure that such flawed planning in regard to road design does not take place again.

You may have seen my letter to the editor published recently in the Saanich News, in which I showed that the costs of implementing Saanich's quarter billion dollar Active Transportation Plan, are frustratingly opaque.  This plan must be reined in to prevent Saanich's debt, taxes and utility costs from skyrocketting ever further.

A District of Saanich document in 2024 showed Saanich's debt skyrocketing from $54.6 million in 2023 to $424 million by 2033. - Sasha Izard

Also, an excellent new article by Joshua Van Es, looks at the lane typologies in the Tillicum area, and what this means for Saanich.  Josh has previously written letters to the editor on Saanich's flawed street designs putting a much needed critical eye and international perspective on the issues.

Thank you again for all of your support.  We succeeded in getting the critically flawed and dangerous lane typologies thrown out of the Quadra McKenzie Plan, now let's ensure that for the next four years that transportation planning in Saanich is level-headed from now on.
