Das Problem

Two Uyghur men in Thailand have been sentenced to death following their conviction in connection with the 2015 Bangkok bombing. Their lawyers have announced plans to appeal, while human rights organizations have raised serious concerns regarding the fairness and transparency of the proceedings.

While the victims of the bombing and their families deserve justice, justice must be based on fairness, transparency, and respect for fundamental human rights. The death penalty is irreversible, and no execution should take place while concerns remain regarding due process, the handling of evidence, and the defendants' ability to receive a fair and independent appeal.

This case is particularly alarming in light of Thailand's recent treatment of Uyghurs. In February 2025, Thai authorities deported approximately 40 Uyghur detainees to China despite warnings from the United Nations and human rights organizations that they could face persecution, arbitrary detention, or other serious human rights violations upon their return. The fate of many of those deported remains unclear.

The sentencing of two Uyghur defendants to death, combined with the broader concerns surrounding the treatment of Uyghurs in the region, raises important questions about justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights. Human rights organizations have criticized aspects of the trial and called for greater scrutiny of the proceedings to ensure that international fair trial standards are fully respected.

This case is about more than two individuals. It is about whether justice is carried out fairly, transparently, and in accordance with international human rights standards. Executing these men before all concerns have been thoroughly examined would risk causing irreversible injustice.

Our Demands
We call on the Government of Thailand to:

Immediately suspend the death sentences imposed on the two Uyghur defendants.
Guarantee a fair, transparent, and independent appeal process in accordance with international human rights standards.
Allow international observers and human rights experts to monitor the proceedings.
Ensure that all judicial decisions are based solely on credible evidence, due process, and the rule of law.
Respect the human rights of Uyghurs and all vulnerable minorities within Thailand's jurisdiction.
We also call on the United Nations, the European Union, democratic governments, and human rights organizations around the world to closely monitor this case and encourage Thailand to uphold its commitments to justice, transparency, and human dignity.
