Birth Control in Texas for Minors

The Issue

Currently in Texas, women need to be 18 years old to obtain birth control without having parental consent. While you are able to obtain Plan B at any age, we should not make it become a habit for young sexually active girls to rely on the morning after pill simply because they don’t have access to birth control. Condoms are able to be purchased at any age, as well as pregnancy tests, but birth control is not. Texas allows women to purchase pregnancy tests, but not medication that could prevent pregnancy all together. Girls in bad familial positions aren’t in good situations to where they can feel comfortable asking to be on birth control, which leads to them having unsafe sex, and ultimately can result in pregnancy.

The age to obtain birth control without parental consent should be lowered to 16. Girls are able to legally drive at that age, but still cannot prevent having a child.
