[OUR SANCTUARY CAMPUS PETITION WAS MEANT TO PROTECT STUDENTS FROM THIS BILL THAT IS BEING HEARD IN THE STATE CAPITOL TODAY] Texas campuses like Texas A&M University- Commerce are now to be included in anti-sanctuary, anti-immigrant Senate Bill 4, running the risk of turning our university police department into federal immigration law enforcement. Something they are not trained to do. SB 4 has also been made an “emergency item” by Gov. Abbott which means it's being fast-tracked for a VOTE at an never-before-seen pace. This limits the people of Texas from speaking against this bill, and will quickly turn it into a law used to terrorize immigrant students like you, and people of color, across our communities and campuses. The Texas Legislature meets every two years to pass legislation for our state. In 2015, undocumented students helped defeat heavily anti-immigrant bills but now, elected officials in Texas have made it a priority to pass legislation that harshly targets undocumented immigrants and makes Texas less safe for everyone. Senate Bill 4 (priority anti-immigrant bill in the Texas Legislature) is being heard TODAY. That's why it is very important to show you're against such bill.
